16,000 steps
It’s what I normally do
On a long day at work
When I’m caring for you
And not just you, my sisters,
My mothers to be
Partners, family and others
Waiting expectantly
And the freshly fledged midwives
Just finding their way
It can be terrifying
Your very first day
And those older
The ones who have been there a while
Sometines just need reminding
That its ok to smile
And the young eager doctors
Who look so alone
Many come from far places
They’re a long way from home
We didn’t think it important
‘Til vacancies soared
Then we just plugged the gaps
Stealing skills from Abroad
And instead we raised bankers
And “Branding Gurus”
Whilst a looming health crisis
Barely made front page news
Then of course covid came
Shook us out of our lull
But still no clear solutions
Leaders’ brains just too dull
They’re too busy with parties
Changing various rules
To keep milking the system
And treat us like fools
And how many of them
Mingling with Private reps
Do you reckon routinely walk
This many steps?
