On a day in December
A very scared man
Warned the rest of the world
That we needed to plan
For a horror was coming
Like none seen before
At least nothing like it
since the Second World War
We were all far too slow
To respond to the warning
It had already spread
By the following morning
A half hearted effort
Was made to contain it
We could cope for a while
But could we sustain it?
Death numbers were rising
You could all do the sums
So you clapped every Thursday
Some used saucepans for drums
We sweated our socks off
While numbers just soared
Meanwhile friends home on furlough
Complained they were bored
Now the cracks in our system
Have been further exposed
To fill them, more levies
Will soon be imposed
Healthcare needs much more money
The easiest way?
Hit the biggest employer
Take it out of our pay
While I’m out on the shop floor
And doing real graft
Some fat man in an office
Is writing a draft
Coming up with ideas
For how he can squeeze
More sweat out of staff
Already on their knees
We’re passionate people
And we still want to care
But the way that you’re treating us
Just isn’t fair
Instead of giving false promise
And lyrical waxes
Why not go after those
Who are paying no taxes
