The Midwife’s Mask

Your baby goes to NNU

For tests and drugs

That’s what they do

But now the mood has somewhat changed

An urgent move must be arranged

Your baby’s not had a great start

Seems there’s a problem with her heart

We think these days we know it all

With all our clever tools and tricks

But nature can’t be always tamed

And some things can’t be found or fixed

And one main tube keeps her alive

Taped so securely to her cheek

That barely can you see her face

When you’re allowed a tiny peek

And by your bed we smile and wait

The transport team so calm and kind

Beneath the tubes and other kit

Your baby is quite hard to find

Off they trundle to a place

Of specialty and excellence

And you will follow later on

When you have regained your strength

Now back to all my other tasks

I hide my thoughts

Behind my mask

And tend to other people’s needs
